This style is called Art Deco, and experts was a direct response both aesthetically and philosophically to the Art Nouveau style and modernist movement in general. Art Nouveau began to phase out during WWI as many designers and experts felt the elaborate detail, delicate designs, and often expensive materials and production methods of the style were not suited to an increasingly more mechanized and automated world.
So what really is Art Deco? Brittanica defines it by “simple, clean shapes, often with a “streamlined” look; ornament that is geometric or stylized from representational forms; and unusually varied, often expensive materials, which frequently include man-made substances”.
