ateljé Lyktan Now On Love That Design

Swedish brand ateljé Lyktan develops and manufactures luminaires for outdoor and indoor environments, always putting light, people and the environment at the centre of their processes. We are proud to welcome them on board Love That Design!

At the end of the vast flatlands of southern Sweden, at the edge of the Baltic Sea, lies the small town of Åhus. This is the setting for ateljé Lyktan, a lighting manufacturer with an 85-year long history, and an archive of lights that have defined Swedish design over the last century. In their 12,000 square metre factory, the brand works with a host of renowned contemporary designers, to design, develop and manufacture luminaires for outdoor and indoor environments.

About ateljé Lyktan

Steeped in history

In 1934, in a Copenhagen milk bar, Hans Bergström and his girlfriend, Verna Norell, came up with the idea to make lamps and weave rugs. The Swedish words for workshop and lamp combined to form the name, ateljé Lyktan.

Over the decades, as the company grew, Bergström’s luminaires became popular internationally, and his lamps were even represented at the famous Museum Of Modern Art in New York. The designer created lighting installations for the Students Union in Lund which attracted attention both at home and abroad. One of his most treasured awards on the luminaire side was obtained at the tenth Milan Triennale in 1954. A cone-shaped luminaire in plastic, Model 181, was awarded a prize for its simplicity and grace. This luminaire is still in production and is popularly known as the “Cone”. And in 1972, Design Director Anders Pehrson took atelje Lyktan to the Munich Olympics with 16,300 lamps, different models of Simris that are still available to date, except now with LED. This remains the largest order in the company’s history.

In 1970, global lighting brand, Fagerhult took over atelje Lyktan and propelled the brand into a global entity with a larger factory and supply chain. Today, the brand is a prominent lighting supplier across all major western cities.

“ateljé’s heritage from the small Swedish hut is still visible today with their timeless and iconic Scandinavian style. We continue to work closely with top designers, allowing them to freely express their creativity, always resulting in unique new releases.”
