As the discussion continues, we learn that nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, all the designers were in agreement about the fact that hiring an independent lighting design service (one that is not linked to a lighting manufacturer) would actually save the client a lot of money. As well as a better set up that does not need to be fixed or uprooted and replaced one year down. Not having a lighting designer on a specialist project can see costs skyrocket during installation and post handover.
Contrary to popular misconception, a lighting designer will actually save the client money by specifying the right product within the best price and budget. Independent lighting designers are not under any obligation to push certain brands or products
Also, when a designer sits within an interior design company or under the umbrella of a large manufacturer, they tend to work with a limited portfolio of products. And so, the selection of products on the project do not necessarily reflect the best choice, but more a choice made from the limitations of a portfolio.
Independent lighting designers, as their title suggests, are free to shop across the spectrum and choose from a diverse range of products, making sure that they not only are perfect for each space, but also come at the best or right price.
