The ReSURGEnce of a Sustainable Future

Fluff up that tiara, dust out your dinner suits and join us for a gala affair. Surge for Water wants you to join in to help create a better tomorrow.

For the uninitiated, Surge for Water is an organisation dedicated to helping communities in need, access clean drinking water and sanitation services. With a strong presence in the UAE, Surge Middle East’s work includes various activities aimed at educating the public, and more importantly the school going generation of the UAE, on water conservation and related sustainable practices. Their ‘Design, Dine & Make a Difference’ gala is a unique event born out of a synergy between the driven team at Surge and the design and architecture community’s commitment to sustainable design.

This year, on their 10th Anniversary, the annual gala dinner will be held at The Address Hotel, Dubai Marina. The theme is all about bright, multifunctional sustainable design, and aptly named “reSURGEnce”.

We at Love That Design feel strongly about this cause (as you probably can tell) and urge readers to step up and join in. It’s not just about the gala experience. The event acts as a competitive platform for design firms to compete and showcase their best, sustainable masterpieces. UAE’s leading design houses spend months honing bespoke creations that will be unveiled at the gala.

The brief for the designers was just that – to create products that inspire sustainable living, thus initiating a brighter tomorrow. Surge further challenged the designers to shed some light on sustainability by adding a lighting element to their design. Participation was diverse and came from varied design styles and backgrounds. The eclectic bunch includes Al Tayer Stocks, Binchy & Binchy, Bluu UAE, Design by Mariska, Gensler, Maja Kozel Design, Migaloo Home and MMAC Design Associates.

In addition to raising awareness for our work, through their creations, the designers are inspiring people to live sustainably, thus creating a brighter world. In that spirit, this year’s theme is reSURGEnce.”

Marita Peters, Executive Director at Surge, explained their viewpoint on sustainable and multifunctional design as a crucial extension to everyday living.

“Increased mobility, bigger cities, and frantic lifestyles and consumption: we all are a part of it! Our current way of life leads to reduced living spaces and diminishing natural resources. This year we have encouraged designers to do more with less through multifunctional design.

“A well-lit future requires reimagining the way we think about our planet. In addition to raising awareness for our work, through their creations, the designers are inspiring people to live sustainably, thus creating a brighter world. In that spirit, this year’s theme is reSURGEnce.”

The event is supported by some of top designers from the country. Known as Surge Ambassadors, these designers will help in getting the word out to the design community at large. These include Paul Bishop of Bishop Design, Carla Conte from Brand Creative, Isabel Pintado from Wilson Associates, Diane Thorsen of Perkins + Will, Ben Piper from Killa Design, and Ben Corrigan from Bluehaus Group. The charitable event is hosted in collaboration with presenting sponsors No Grey Area International and Fagerhult MENA. Other major sponsors include MAS Paints, Modulyss, Milliken & Company and Sunon Furniture.
