Trendspotting 2022: Lighting

All lighting is a form of mood lighting. Strong, dull, bright, or understated, lighting has a strong influence on our mental state and productivity. It sets the tone and ambience, and subconsciously dictates the behavior of a room’s inhabitants.

Lighting products have come a long way. From simple light bulbs and tube lights to LED technology and beautiful, 3D printed statement pieces. Even basic flip switches are being replaced with mobile apps that are used to adjust the brightness and other aspects of lighting. There’s something for everyone, no matter how simple or wild your design intent.

Here are 5 lighting trends we’re seeing this year.

1. Statement Lighting

Furniture tends to shoulder a lot of the responsibility when it comes to making an impression, but it doesn’t have to. Lighting is a great option to share some of the spotlight ( pun intended ), and by all means, should be treated like an art piece in your home or office space. You can go with classic chandeliers, or something far more contemporary. Rest assured, there’s something in the market for you.

For something simple but stylish, check out Normann Copenhagen’s Coil Lamp. If you’re really looking to make a bold statement like no other, consider one of Lladro’s beautiful chandeliers. We recommend the recent seasons collection that will have people staring at the ceiling during your dinner party. But if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, check out the Sans Souci collection.

2. LED Sculpture Lights

It’s 2022 and malleable LED is our friend. These LEDs are actually being used to make light-up art such as illuminated drawings or doodles. It’s an artsier and more flexible way of doing neon pictorial lights and works great when wanting to brighten artwork or your decor. One great example of this is Ateljé Lyktan’s Eclipse pendant lighting – a stunning work of art plus the use of LEDs. Or you can work with the NGA team to have something custom-made just for your design. Bold and timeless. Trendy bespoke statement lighting, elegant, oversized fixtures to elevate your interior.

3. Flushmounts

For those not familiar with the term, a flush mount ceiling light is typically a dome-shaped ceiling light fixture that’s mounted so that it’s embedded within and flush to the ceiling. Why is it popular this year? Experts feel this is a great way to add some character to the room without being too explicit or bold. In short, it’s a great way to add some style to those recessed lighting fixtures. With several options and shapes such as the drum, bowl, or dome – you’re bound to find something you like!

4. Multiple Levels and Layering Lights

Instead of lights all on one level – ceiling or otherwise – experts suggest mixing it up across your home. Many feel that this year will see the return of the layered lighting look and a resurgence of incorporating multiple lighting products in a room. These work especially well for large spaces that allows us to install multiple lights. Additionally, digital technology means we don’t have to go to different corners of the room to control the lights when we can just use our phones. Overhead lamps can provide accents in the spaces, while task lights can be used when needed.

So many products to work with here. Like Fagerhult’s Skywalker; The Beta Opti Nano louvre provides high efficiency and optimal light comfort without multiple shadows. Or check out Kreon’s oran pendant that allows you to neatly add some sophisticated touches with their lamps at multiple heights.

5. Room-Specific Lighting

You wouldn’t put task chairs in your living room, or a bed in your living room. So why have the same type of lighting everywhere? Even lighting manufacturers are beginning to understand that and tailor designs and needs for room-specific purposes. According to Jennifer Markowitz of JNR Designs, lighting can be challenging to get right, but the trick is going room by room. Compartmentalizing rooms makes it much easier to design, and we can install lights that fit the purpose and design of the space.

If you’re looking for beautiful lamps, check out Louis Poulsen’s Panthella and Moonsetter. Another option is the Slice pendant lamp from Zero Lighting that adds a nice modern touch to the room. Or, if you’re looking for something funky, iGuzzini’s Polsino, Zurigo, and Nitia might be more your style.
