Broadway Student Design Competition Vol 2 –
Product Design Winner
Where better to announce the winner of the Broadway Design Competition Vol 2 – Product Design, than at Dubai Design Week! This year’s competition developed in partnership with Boss Design, Heriot Watt and The American University of Dubai (AUD) asked students to design a seating solution, from a range of specified materials, with judges Chris Barnes, Broadway Interiors; Carla Conte, Brand Creative and Ben Mitchell, Boss Design not knowing which university the entries came from.
There were a number of submissions from both universities, with two concepts from students studying at AUD making it through to the final, with both design prototypes, manufactured by Marwan Ali Furniture, the partners in the UAE of Boss Design. These were displayed in the Vitra showroom in D3 during the event, with Daline Abubaker and Mallika Takiar announced as winners with their ‘Das Skelett’ Concept. The students designed a collapsible sun lounger that can fold into a backpack and were presented with the award at the Vitra Showroom on Thursday 11 November. What a great idea for sun lovers!

“Vol 2 of the competition has been hugely rewarding as it has allowed us to support the next generation of designers with practical knowledge as they begin to embark on their integration into the workplace. This year’s competition focused on functional furniture design and it was great to see the knowledge and appreciation gained by the students as their concepts were transformed into physical prototypes. Daline and Mallika showed amazing vision for a product with massive potential, which is a fantastic conclusion!”

“I personally enjoy collaborating with peers during the judging process and then mentoring the finalists for development of their ideas and it was so rewarding this year to see their delight as their vision came to life. I would like to thank everyone involved, particularly Boss Design and Marwan for their technical expertise, Heriot Watt and AUD for making the competition possible, judges, Carla Conte from Brand Creative and Ben Mitchell from Boss Design for their time and energy and finally Swisscotech for hosting the event and displaying their furniture during Dubai Design Week! I already have ideas bubbling for Volume 3, so watch this space for more announcements!”
