Kristina Zanic Consultants Designs Contemporary Island Interiors For Marriott’s Domes Miramare Extension In Corfu
The holiday destination of Corfu is getting a contemporary addition to the local resort scene, with a considerable extension opening in the popular Domes Miramare resort.
The hotel will now be able to accommodate more guests and offer additional amenities after recently incorporating and renovating an existing neighboring property. The 7,000 sqm extension opened 1st June and adds 69 rooms and suites to the existing 113 units, as well as a spa, pool, gym, restaurant and loft bar. The five-star adults-only hotel has been developed by Greek hospitality group Domes Resorts & Reserves and is operated under Marriot’s Luxury Collection brand.
Kristina Zanic’s design team was appointed for the extension’s interior remodel, following its previous interior refurbishment of the main beachfront building in 2018. The extension’s architecture was renovated by Makridis & Associates.
The new spaces offer the same sense of relaxed luxury the property has been known for throughout its history as an exclusive resort owned by the Onassis family and hosting distinguished guests. The design direction for the extension continues on from the main hotel, featuring a fresh contemporary style and drawing elements from local architecture and tradition.
The interior design was developed by Kristina Zanic, Justin Condon and Maria Grammenou, with the latter being especially familiar with the local setting as a longtime Corfu native.
“We wanted the interiors to give a taste of authentic Corfu culture, conveying local tradition in a modern way . There are certain textures and colours that I associate very closely with my upbringing on the island, and we incorporated these elements into the design language of the interiors, doing this in a subtle natural way. We also drew much of the design direction from the building’s architecture, with its simple character and modern arcades.”

The renovated building continues the 1960’s modernist aesthetic of the original resort in a minimalist contemporary style. The completely reinvented façade features simple archways inspired by heritage buildings in the old Corfu town. This is referenced in the interior entryways and in the soft curves of furniture and accessories. Furnishings are intentionally kept low-key and minimal, framing the stunning views of the sea and neighboring five century-old olive grove.
A neutral colour palette of fresh whites, cool greys and natural wood tones is used throughout the spaces. Walls are treated with a textured concrete finish, with feature sections adorned by curved paneling, echoing the motion of the Ionian Sea waves nearby.
Floors are finished in a variety of terrazzo patterns in terracotta, ochre and olive green typically seen in local home exteriors. Of particular note is the distinctive cracked tile flooring in the new reception that calls to mind the annual pot-smashing celebrations in the island’s main square.
Spaces are lightly decorated with contemporary accessories, many of which are made from local olive wood, while custom wall art retells the local myth of a water nymph in a dreamy ethereal way. Ribbed headboards and furniture finishes in guestrooms pay a subtle tribute to classic Greek columns.
