About Bodo Sperlein

Bodo’s designs are internationally renowned for articulating a thorough understanding of material and design detail. Whether providing artistic direction or product design, his passion for materials and sensitivity to aesthetics ensure that his work consistently attracts international praise from some of the design-world’s leading publications and awards.

Trained at University of the Arts London, Bodo established his studio in 2000 after being awarded the Sainsbury’s Scholarship and Crafts Council Grant, and cemented his reputation by designing home accessory collections for London’s iconic fashion store Browns.

Partnering with Michelin-starred restaurants and chefs to produce fine tableware, Bodo’s pieces can be seen in establishments such as The Ledbury, Five Fields, Yauatcha and Tokyo’s Roppongi Terrace. His ceramic collections have been created in partnership with some of the world’s most esteemed manufacturers, including Lladró of Spain, Dibbern of Germany, Thomas Goode of England, Nymphenburg of Bavaria and Nikko of Japan.

Bodo’s repertoire includes collaborations and commissions within a multitude of industries, from furniture to electronics. Each unique project calls upon his skill as a product designer and artistic director, with his international clientele ranging from leading luxury brands including the LVMH group, Mulberry, Agent Provocateur and Swarovski, to lesser-known companies such as Tane, a Mexico-based heritage silverware brand, for which he rejuvenated and modernised its portfolio. Bodo’s work has also taken him into the world of high-end home technology. As Creative Director of eminent German technology brand Loewe, he designed the bild 3,4,5 & 9 television collections and the Klang 9 audio products, which achieved global acclaim in the press and won a Land Rover BORN Award and an IF Design Award.

Recent launches include Script, an innovative lighting series for acclaimed Viennese manufacturer Lobmeyr, which premiered at Maison & Objet 2019. For Viennese cult brand Jarosinski & Vaugoin, one of the world’s finest silverware manufacturers, Bodo designed the ONDA centrepiece collection, which was awarded the Wallpaper* Design Award 2020. He ventured into the textile world for his partnership with celebrated fabric house nya nordiska, and in March 2020 premiered his collection of beds with family-owned luxury bedding manufacturer Richard & Co.
