About the project
Located within the ever evolving Shindagha District, this new addition to Dubai’s renowned Cultural Quarter gives visitors valuable insight into Emirati culture, social rituals and heritage. GSM Project developed a blend of unique, interactive and immersive spaces, while dpa lighting consultants worked closely with the curators to develop a strong yet flexible lighting concept that highlighted all aspects of the museum experience.
The Perfume House exhibition, a re-appropriation of the building, consists of a main covered gallery with smaller galleries within, and an external courtyard. Individual galleries trace and define the narrative of scent and perfume making through the ages, as well as detailing the geopolitical and demographic impact associated with the trade routes. Traditional exhibits, such as vessels and stone work, are illuminated to enhance their tactile and material qualities, while more contemporary ones, such as interactive screens and scent stations, demanded a less intensive approach to illumination.
The Story of the Creek exhibition consists of several main galleries and an interactive cinema experience that relates the story of Dubai Creek. Once again, traditional exhibits, such as maps and chandlery, were highlighted through illumination, while interactive models and history stations were given less lighting exposure.
Overall, existing architectural features have been highlighted to enhance the contemporary exhibitions against the more traditional building fabric, while still revealing colour, contrast, form and texture.
