About the project
Designed by GEO_ID, the Altayli Residence in Istanbul is owned by a couple who also happen to be renowned writers in Turkey.
413 square metres of space comprise three apartments merged together with high ceiling and windows. In the living room, the back wall serves as a library with an office desk to create a work environment right in the heart of the house. The painting in the center of the library is the main design focus here, and its unique frame is also an artwork in itself.
The design carries classical French elements in a modern manner – Victorian panels are placed on the walls in a contemporary fashion using non-standardised proportions and double framing of rigid rectangular frames. The culture of the location is translated into the interiors through classical elements – antiques, originals and traditional lighting fixtures – which are then juxtaposed with bold, simple surfaces and textures, forming a modern identity. The couple’s art collection came heavily into play, and was curated and displayed in unique ways and forms, working as more than just decorative elements.
The master bedroom’s open plan is devoid of any boundaries. Levels of transparency between the bedroom, bathroom and closet are created via large tinted glass panels with mirrors placed overhead. Children rooms, despite their relatively small spaces, are designed with a minimalistic brush. The kitchen too, is simple yet designed as a place where the family gathers. The terrace and its breathtaking view contributes to the Istanbul lifestyle. Each and every area of the residence has its own story, stitched together to create one unified concept and spirited design.
