About the project
The American University in Cairo, AUC, is one of the leading higher education institutions in Egypt and internationally renowned for its excellence in the teaching, research, creative expression fields and the services offered.
The campus was recently renovated and redesigned in order to serve as a cultural centre: the opening to the community and the wide diffusion of convivial spaces being its main features. The aim was to offer society the opportunity to join cultural events, art exhibitions, concerts, lectures and much more. The renovation work of the Tahrir cultural centre also included the opening of a cafeteria designed by Style Design Architects studio.
Characterized by a contemporary design which harmoniously contrasts with the ancient stone walls, much of the architectural harmony of the campus, comes from geometry, materials and landscaping. The avenue along the central spine connects everything and the thoughtful geometric transitions along the avenue — each gateway, courtyard and plaza — orchestrate the passage to a new space. Moving through the campus, the sandstone creates a unity of material for the central-campus building walls with landscaping knitting the entire campus together.
