About the project
It is not often that we come across restaurant outlets designed by the owners themselves. The recently launched dining, entertainment and retail outlet, Charade Cafe, in Jumeirah, has been entirely conceptualised by its owners. The store sells unusual artistic garments, accessories and fashion pieces, as well as funky contemporary art pieces that are showcased throughout the restaurant.
The restaurant has two dining areas, separated from the concept store by a full-height, partition wall of concrete blocks in deconstructed style. The wall was designed mainly to display the merchandise and has randomly lit openings, which create an interesting space when customers enter. A four-metre high door finished in backed (cracked) paint creates a double opening into both dining areas. Throughout the space, the walls are covered with concrete in different shades of grey. Concrete is also applied to the bar counter, which was intentionally chipped in some places to have an industrial appeal. Cracked subway tiles are placed along the design of the walls above the bar and kitchen, and an exposed ceiling consisting of suspended, mat black, metal mesh with tube pendants, frames the table layout and forms zones. The overall interior accentuates the concept of Charade, which is to showcase a Charade pervading sense of mystery.
