About the project
The brief created for Larte was to showcase the best of contemporary Italian design, culinary creativity and artistic expression in a casual licensed café/restaurant located in Dubai’s flourishing design district. The initiative of this venue was a joint venture between Roya Hospitality and the Altagamma foundation – a committee of high end Italian cultural, fashion and design brands from differing sectors that are united by a continuous search of innovation and quality which for 25 years has been bringing together globally recognized ambassadors of Italian style. Looking to exhibit their brands in a media and product driven space, the Client envisioned bringing an original concept to the Dubai Food and Beverage market by creating a venue where art meets a dining and bar experience which fuse into one visually dynamic and versatile venue. It was to be a functional combination of open kitchen, bar, lounge and bistro all in one homogenous space. Inspiration was to be derived from fashion and art in order to achieve an eclectic, unconventional yet comfortable and approachable dining location for the Clientele of Dubai Design District (D3.) Bishop Design LLC‘s approach was to create a controversial and thought-provoking concept, with the main focus fulfilling the Client’s wish to bring a brand-new experience to Dubai by creating an edgy and vibrant interior accomplished by using boldly colored fabrics, surface projections and bespoke furniture. Larte was to offer an all-day dining experience combining a counter service café and full service licensed trattoria.
A striking new addition to Dubai’s design district the whole venue is subtly dressed with off-beat and sexy details, discreetly hidden in every corner. With floor to ceiling windows the implementation of cleverly criss-cross colored strings of wool instead of curtains or blinds were applied to limit the sunlight entering, in addition to restricting a visual connection to the offering being served within – an idea that was also replicated on the tables and as the central piece of artwork in the main café area, offering unlimited potential for all creative outlets, with the bar and bistro counters being particular features to highlight fusing elegantly raw materials and refined details giving it a somewhat unconventional feel whilst still allowing the ability to project both static and kinetic visual content upon its surface whereas fragmented graphic ceiling panels float overhead and floors morph from a simple cementitious finish to a more visually dynamic floor pattern. Throughout the venue striking peg walls are used for art installations and the display of objects, perfectly demonstrating how versatile and interchangeable this venue can become.
The use of boldly colored strings as opposed to curtains or blinds highlight the originality and uniqueness of the design application utilized in Larte, and gives the venue a dynamic aesthetic as the sun is able to radiate through the full-length windows, whilst still adhering to the operator’s functional aspirations. The innovative bespokely detailed peg wall also required the commissioned services of professional local and international creative artists.
Larte offers a creative, original and imaginative experience to Dubai’s ever evolving dining scene. Larte is an ideal blend of two distinct concepts that have successfully fused into one another, creating a sense of immediate distinctiveness and style. The design team found the interior to be a unique, highly desired offering to the Middle East with its bold, exciting and provocative aesthetics complemented by the contemporary yet raw use of the thoughtfully applied finishes and details. Besides its unquestionable edginess and avant-garde concept, Larte is a reflection of the society we live in – its media driven, dynamic and engages all of the senses. This concept is a new story in the book that is Dubai and one that will constantly evolve whilst creating a place with its own identity, remaining harmonious with its surroundings.
