About the project
Designed by Atelier EPJ, Mama Zonia is a vibrant party destination that stands out from rest of the experiences across the levels in Pier 7. The focus was on creating a casual lifestyle destination outlet that reflects the vibrancy of a rain forest. In terms of spaces, the requirements were pretty simple – the dining areas, the beverage bar, the raw bar & the kitchen. The spaces were laid out across as an open plan configuration for the front-of-house experiences, where the guests can journey through and see everything, but not quiet as there are certain elements that need to be discovered – just like a rainforest.
Mama Zonia’s design is a homage to the Amazon, imitating its vibrancy & lushness. And this entire ambience translates in the daring menu and cocktails, at the crossroads of Asian, Caribbean and Amazonian inspirations and throughout the decor, from the terrace to the indoor dining area, crudo bar and dynamic beverage bar scene.
The colonial era references stretch onto the terrace, imitating tropical verandas with rattan and woven cane furniture, tables with hand-painted tiles. The much more cosy indoor spaces were designed for comfort and to reflect the vibrancy of forest colors – draped in velvet upholstery & tropical wall linings filled with ample greenery. The ‘Kahrs’ produced timber floorings are complemented by patchworks of tropical hand-made encaustic concrete tiles, perhaps recovered from a lost city and carefully re-crafted according to ancient methods, with vibrant natural pigments. Elements from the fauna & flora also punctuate the décor, with parrots and monkeys, flowers and luxuriant vegetation throughout, from the feature mango tree to pot plants reaching all the way up to the ceilings’ open panels and abundant suspended foliage thats beautifully crafted by the ‘Foliages’ team. Amidst this imaginary Amazonian realm, metal works by artist John Underwood provide structure.
