About the project
Designed by Sundukovy Sisters, the brief for this project was to create a hotel atmosphere that is inspired by local history and flair. The interior should send the guests on an adventure they will remember and talk about. Upon entering the lobby, guests find themselves in an impressive theater interior where historical elements are presented in a contemporary way. The branded Mercure wall was placed next to the entrance and features an unusual brick layout. The construction of the wall creates a secluded internal space with paintings based on the Hoffman fairytale, painted by modern artist Igor Skaletsky. Instead of a traditional tall reception counter, standalone desks of varying heights were placed with comfortable chairs next to them with burgundy velvet curtains, a crystal chandelier, and modern light fixtures creating a theatrical effect. In order to play on the hotel’s waterfront location, the ceiling and some of the walls were painted a deep blue colour.
White marble was used to build the bar, with the back wall decorated with a mirror that magnified volume and shape. The design of this space was inspired by the city of Kaliningrad – a modern interpretation of towers, steeples, and inclined roofs. Graphic patters of historic facades appear on the floors, walls, and ceilings.
The overall effect of the interior design is dramatic and memorable, with complex colours, theatrical lighting, art and a modern rendering of bricks. All of this creates an atmosphere of comfort, warmth, hospitality, and fairytale in the Mercure Kaliningrad hotel.
