About the project
From the very first time they visited this waterfront site in Sag Harbor, Daun Curry Design Studio were struck by the incredible views of the water that would be seen from each room in the house. The client – Jennifer Bayer Michaels, a political fundraiser and manager of JB Consulting – wanted a space that spoke to them and their love of the ocean but also had fun vibrant moments to highlight their love of pop art, which drew inspiration from for form, color and geometry. The entry stair tower is centered around earthy shapes and natural materials, with a double-height Giogali white glass chandelier and a custom marble bench. A painting by Alexandros Vasmoulakis adds a singular moment of bold color, and hints at the adjacent vibrant pink onyx-clad powder room.
The living room is anchored by a magnificent silk rug from Tai Ping, in shimmery, watery blues and silvers, giving the effect of floating on water. A handsome, low-profile sofa by Minotti is upholstered in cozy two-tone neutral fabrics, and the fluid, sensual rocking chair from Giorgetti evokes bleached driftwood and the fluid forms of water. The strong, sculptural forms of the ceramic and oak dining table by India Mahdavi continue this theme in the formal dining area of the home. A custom white lacquer and chrome console table mirror the frothy, bubble-like forms of the Apparatus chandelier.
The formal dining area flows through to the kitchen, composed of a fun, joyful mix of vibrant blue marble, handmade ceramic tile, and white-stained oak. The design challenge for the kitchen was to strike the right balance between form and function. It is a glass house and there aren’t many solid walls, so you see right through the house. The kitchen needed to be a strong sculptural element but also functional for the family. Thus, they created a playful, Mondrian-like composition of intersecting forms and textures with open spaces for cooking, dining and lounging.
Up the floating staircase, the mezzanine is clean and sleek with a minimal, gallery-like feel. The client has an impressive art collection, and needed a place to display some of their favorite pieces to full effect, including works by Boo Saville and Mr. Brainwash. The master bedroom is framed by water views on one side, which is balanced by a custom-designed mosaic tiled wall by Sicis on the other. A fluid, sensual design of rippling water patterns, it sits behind a biomorphic chaise lounge chair by Poliform. The bed is a custom design, upholstered in a patterned Perennials fabric with artwork by Rana Begum displayed above. The silk rug is from Cliff Young.
In one of the children’s rooms, the designers created custom bunk beds for the client’s daughter. The bunkbed is sculptural and whimsical, with each step a different shade of pink and blue. Tom Dixon pendants and a heart-shaped rocking chair by Ron Arad add a little touch of fantasy. The crown jewel of the house is the outdoor living area where the family can enjoy al fresco dining and lounging with multiple comfy seating areas, an outdoor firepit, a fully equipped outdoor kitchen complete with pizza oven, an infinity pool and magnificent views of the Noyack Bay.
