About the project
South African designer Tristan Du Plessis and his eponymous studio are behind the design personality of the beach club.
The restaurant is an open-plan space with a huge open kitchen and art and sculpture is used throughout to communicate the SĀN story. Its finished emphasis is on African luxe, which Du Plessis defines as a luxurious feel created with raw and primal materials and textures. Their favourite design highlight is the form of the interior space; through the use of curves, arches and soft edges the space seems as though it has been moulded by hand out of ancient clay and has an almost poetic softness and feminine feel.
The art that infuses the space is another feature. All made in Africa, from the beach sculpture made by the artist Jake Singer, the ceramic outdoor tables handmade in Cape Town, Lamps by Jan Ernst, sculptural pots by Jade Paton and the enigmatic sculptural bench from David Krynauw. The outdoor pools are features in and of themselves and offer visual refreshment set against the sand.
