About the project
Luxurious interiors that interact with nature…
The Nine, Mirissa is a luxury boutique resort villa in Sri Lanka, designed to take maximum advantage of the site’s magnificent views. Designed by Tim Dean, the villa comprises nine levels that beautifully integrated into their surrounding landscape. Visitors enter through a sliding gate into a stone walled garden and parking area. A freestanding lift tower takes guests up to a bridge that crosses high over the swimming pool terrace to the ‘Gallery’, which is a long balcony-like reception space that sits under the main level. From here, a monumental stone wall and staircase lead up through the middle of the property to access the rest of the levels. The large double height living and dining space opens onto a deep terrace spanning the width of the building, with views of the pool, Weligama Bay and the palm tree covered hinterland. A mezzanine entertainment area overlooks the main living area, and on a level above sits a bar that offers uninterrupted 270 degree views.
Wall tiles are interspersed within the interior to create a break from the vast polished cement while the doors and custom furniture was made by a local joiner using recycled jack timber (from jackfruit trees). Bathroom fittings were imported directly from Italy and combined with locally made sanitary ware. Terracing was used to increase the amount of useable area and create an exciting multi-level space, each offering expansive views of the breathtaking landscape while also overlooking the various other levels. Extensive use of Breezway louvre windows enables huge flexibility and control of natural ventilation while simultaneously minimising obstruction of views.
