About the project
Toro + Ko is located within Citywalk 2 and is owned by the renowned Meraas Group. The interior is set over two levels and allows the Clientele to seamlessly travel both visually and physically between its differing spatial interiors. Surfaces within were to be raw, urban and diverse leaving one in visual awe. There was also a requirement for the incorporation of thought provoking, bold, graphic and bespoke commissioned artworks to be located within, creating the center and heart of the space. Seamless floors were to be considered, incorporating a diverse combination of fluid poured concrete surfaces and Terrazzo flooring that would create a visually dynamic link between the different areas, whereas ceilings were to be stripped back and exposed adorned by beautifully bespoke decorative and technical lighting which in turn would enhance the interiors unique atmosphere.
The transitions between external and internal dimensions were to be seamless and allow the exterior to penetrate within. There was also a consideration to be thoughtfully provided in the creation of an open plan kitchen, beer dispense area and martini cocktail bar that would provide the key visual theatrics within, creating a central point and nucleus of the interiors physicality. Warm natural colors were to be balanced against the overall industrial refinement to create the desired unique and intoxicating ambient. The application of current materials were to be considered such as cold rolled steel, Corten rusted sheet, reclaimed distressed wood, troweled concrete rendered wall surfaces, cementitious poured floorings, saddle and cracked leathers through to the use of bespoke fire glazed kitchen tiles used in harmony with rippled and chicken wire glass along with a varying array and combinations of metals such as brass and copper used within that would provide the ultimate visual experience.
Key aspects of the design interiors in particular include the colorful, modern and industrial style decor created within the dining and bar areas. In addition to this, the seamless transition created between the interior and exterior dimensions allow the space to open up and become more versatile to the operator’s needs. Other key features deserving of a mention is the elegant diversity of materials and surfaces used within achieving the ultimate dining and culinary experience – urban and raw yet sumptuous and comfortable, all harmoniously balanced with a thoughtfully collated selection of interior furniture and furnishings. Inside the restaurant the industrial chic of the ground floor offers a close-up TV view of the kitchen drama created by head chef Oscar Poquet Bigorda and his team. A metal staircase leads to the upper level where subtle tones of cerulean and cocoa play off against each other for a more retro and laid-back vibe, whilst a long bar and DJ station compete for attention. Without forgetting the selfie inclined Clientele, there is a secret area that provides a stunning backdrop to the mall and towering Burj Khalifa in the near distance.
Set within the licensed area of City Walk, Toro + Ko has immediately set the precedent of future venues within the local area to follow. The bromancers and James Beard winners, along with Bishop Design LLC as the ID consultant and A&T Group as fit-out contractors, have brought a hip, matey vibe to Dubai in collaboration with the mall operators Meraas. The unique food offering of pintxos, small plates, cheeses, cold cuts and a mix of hot and cold tapas sits in perfect equilibrium with the interior dynamics.
