About the project
Located in the heart of Beijing’s business district, the Shangri-La operated Hotel Jen Beijing opened its doors in May 2017 featuring a state of the art fitness center. Train Yard is located on the 4th and 5th floors of the high rise tower and is composed of 2 large changing rooms, expansive cardio and free-weights area, an MMA zone, yoga, Pilates, spin and studio rooms as well 5 signature treatment rooms with access to steam and sauna.
Stirring away from your typical hotel gym, this 3000-member health and fitness center uses a minimal palette of shuttered concrete, copper and stainless steel mesh, alongside an explosion of colour created by the graffiti artwork to create an energetic and exciting atmosphere. Completing the fitness experience is the signature 25m infinity-edge lap pool, featuring bespoke black and white hounds tooth patterned terrazzo tiles, a stunning skylight and sweeping views across the entire city. Ensuring every inch of this impressive fitness centre is customized down to the gym equipment, Stickman collaborated with Life Fitness to develop bespoke camouflage patterns tailored for Hotel Jen.
Another key differentiator of the design is the lighting scene, which changes colour and gradient over time activating the gym and seemingly transforms the look of the space every time you step in. The same principles are used with a twist in the spin room, where the lighting is interconnected with the speed of the bike so as you pedal faster, the lighting intensifies gradually in the overhead tunnel-like structures. Stickman Tribe worked with various graffiti artists from Hong Kong to create unique and individual street art style illustrations throughout the gym. The design of the changing rooms intentionally diverts away from the vibrant and energetic look of the gym and takes on a rather clean and understated palette where the guest can change or unwind in the steam, sauna or comfortably heated loungers available.
At the core of this trend-setting complex however is its revenue capturing connectivity. Strategically located near four other China World properties all linked by tunnels and bridges, as well as a density of local fortune 500 companies, the combined health complex accesses previously untapped business opportunities by attracting a devoted external membership, rather than being dependent on the casual in-house guest.
