Purdah by Designsmith

When one talks about heritage, the few things that cross people’s minds universally are colors, prints, patterns, nature-driven materials like wicker, bamboo, jute. We derived inspiration from these to create a piece that imbibes UAE artisans’ cultural and historical significance with locally available natural resources. We were fascinated with the idea of a divider screen known as PURDAH. Which has been used universally for space creation or segregation throughout the ages. We tried using this screen as a canvas to showcase the rich heritage of UAE. We have selected a palette of materials that includes pearls, which were extracted from the Uae’ coast back in the day and helped form a foundation for the growth of the cities. We’ve also used sustainable materials such as bamboo, Jute and rattan which were largely used by artisans to create beautiful pieces along with dyed threads which showcase vibrancy

Surge has been closely associated with community-driven causes, which help uplift society and play a vital role in women-centric development all across the world. Our Artefact incorporates the colorful threads, jute and wicker which connects back to the time where weaving and other such practices were practiced by women using naturally sustainable materials like wool of sheep, camels and goats, the women created beautiful and distinctive designs rich with geometrical patterns that often reflect both social identity and the surrounding environment.
