Raised in the desert, Andrea Calo grew up on the edge of urban sprawl in Phoenix, Arizona.

Between sunburns and brushes with cholla cacti, the desert made a great impression on her in terms of humans’ shared relationship with place. Exploring these themes, Andrea received her BFA in Photography from the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts at Arizona State University in 2009.

Andrea’s foundation in architectural photography was built photographing desert homes in the greater Phoenix area. In 2012 she relocated to Austin, TX, where she collaborates with clients in translating space to image.

When not at work, Andrea can be found at the best place in the world, Barton Springs Pool.

She is also an active member of the visual arts community in Austin. In 2014 she founded Lower Left, a garage gallery space. With a mission to promote collaboration between local artists, Lower Left housed exhibitions in a South Austin garage, and later joined the arts and education non-profit, Studium. Andrea’s time running Lower Left inspired her to join the collectively-run MASS Gallery in 2017, in the pursuit of facilitating art, collaboration, and community engagement.
