Charm Thai Lounge & Restaurant, Muscat is located in the Crowne Plaza hotel at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, Muscat. The restaurant has been designed to create a unique story that links Muscat with Thailand and mixes fiction with some aspects of Thai history.
The Silk Road is a famous land route used by merchants between Turkey and China, more pertinently there is a sea route which connects Asia with Muscat. In the 16th Century, there was a rebel princess called Suphankanlaya, who disguised as a man, stowed away upon a pirate ship and became a well-travelled and experienced sailor. During the Siam – Burmese war, King Thammaracha’s army was corralled into a valley. A warrior dressed in golden armour, riding an elephant, charged down the Burmese from the rear to win the battle. However, the warrior’s helmet fell off to reveal her true identity and the legend of The Golden Princess was born.
The King was deeply ashamed at being saved by his daughter and banished her from the Kingdom. He ordered all portraits, pictures and history of her erased from the Kingdom. Setting sail from Melaka, she travelled along the Sea Silk Route to Muscat; and after falling in love with the country, and the people, established a tavern which specialized in her native cuisine. Longing but unable to visit her home, she decided to make a pact with a Djinni who gave her everlasting life in return for treasure.
This enabled her to come and go from Muscat to Thailand and all around the world, collecting treasures and bringing them to her home. The interior design and artistic direction of the restaurant reflect this story and the imaginary discovery of her magical home in Muscat, once hidden by palm trees and dunes.
