Downtown Design

After six successful years of showcasing collectible design, Design Days Dubai will be reformed and renamed to take place as a key element within the Downtown Design fair in November, uniting the region’s two leading design events, as an integral part of Dubai Design Week.

Downtown Editions will be a curated exhibition of bespoke and limited-edition design, providing opportunities to buy and commission unique design objects and offering visitors a rare chance learn more about the regional design scene.

Uniting the two exhibitions within Dubai Design Week will strengthen the festival’s comprehensive programme for design enthusiasts, whilst offering a broad and enhanced platform for discovering new talent.

From Yarn to High Fashion

From Yarn to High Fashion Organised by Shaw Contract So we all gathered at the Orangebox Smartworking Showroom for a talk organised by Shaw Contract, and indulged in a spot of embroidery making – unpredictable and incredibly fun. Designers and industry folk first watched a video presentation (one of those ‘The Making Of’ episodes) on Shaw’s famous nylon fibre carpets that promise twenty years of foot traffic without losing their ‘bounce’.

What’s even more winning? That they are completely recyclable. Also exciting to witness and experience was their innovative Inside Shapes toolkit that reinvents the standard 24” x 24” carpet tile, creating unlimited shapes and colour combinations. This was very well received by designers eager to unleash their creativity on these. Fashion designer ZAID FAROUKI gave attendees to the workshop the unique opportunity to make their own yarn art piece and contribute to the creation of a one-off, collective piece of fashion. (Which may or may not make it to the Oscars, here’s hoping…) Hence the morning of embroidering.
