Redefining Agile Seating

Brunner presents ray work, the intuitive office swivel chair

The new office swivel chair from Baden-based contract furniture manufacturer Brunner looks exceptionally elegant, delicate and light: ray work remains true to the flowing design language of the internationally successful ray collection with a semi-transparent breathable mesh back and a slim plastic frame. However, it stands out with a uniquely developed, exquisite range of colours – while breaking new ground in terms of functionality. ray work intuitively adapts to each of its users and impresses with an extraordinarily comfortable, dynamic seating experience. Its secret lies in an innovative mechanism and a clever combination of materials.

ray work is a chair that needs no explanation, in the best sense of the phrase. If it needed one, then we would have done something wrong,” explains Dr Marc Brunner.

Brunner and Stuttgart-based design duo jehs+laub have achieved their goal. For all intents and purposes, they have undeniably succeeded in developing an extraordinary swivel chair in every respect with ray work. Visually, with an elegant, minimalist interpretation of the consistent ray design. And functionally, as ray work eliminates the need for tedious adjustment of the back, seat angle and armrest position to suit individual body sizes. As soon as visitors take a seat, a precisely balanced interplay begins between the various components. ray work responds to every movement – balancing, supporting, cushioning and rocking.

The fantastic functionality of ray work
A great deal of dynamics lie behind the highly functional ray work – despite, or perhaps due to, its graceful appearance. It all started with the remarkably sturdy yet flexible plastic, which led to a clever, slimline design with mobile clamps. In turn, this set up the seat and back to offer a perfectly coordinated, flexible 360-degree range of motion, increasing or decreasing the angle of inclination between the upper body and thigh. This innovative synchronous mechanism guarantees optimum ergonomic positioning at all times during active sitting.

Support for your well-being.
To balance so much agility, ray work offers users firm hold and beneficial support with the automatic weight adjustment of its back – based on the load capacity. The thin, barely visible frame design also interacts in the same way. By its very nature, the spring tension of its material allows a certain amount of comfort for the user. This makes full use of the decorative armrests that evolved from the frame back. Although they are firmly connected to the seat frame, they are able to follow backward movement and comfortably move the arms in the same direction.

Brunner’s latest success: ray mesh.
ray mesh, a specially developed high-performance mesh covering, adds the perfect finishing touch to the outstanding seating comfort provided by the new office chair. It is pleasantly breathable, flexible yet shape-retaining, lightfast and easy-care. Visually, the delicate transparent mesh never fails to impress in seven sophisticated colours with a cosy melange effect and six matching plastic colours for the five-star base and chair frame. A carefully manufactured piping groove surrounding the frame stylishly holds the mesh – just like its alternatives, ray work is available both as a fully upholstered version and with an upholstered seat and mesh back. The cover fabrics provide even greater design flexibility in terms of colours and tactile effects.

Extras and variants.
In addition to the extensive standard design, ray work also offers attractive extras: in the swivelling supporting column, the infinitely variable height adjustment can be replaced with a self-return mechanism. In place of open casters with a hard running surface in black, the five-star base can be completed with grey versions with a soft running surface, plastic or felt gliders. Charming stitching on the seat and back upholstery further upgrades the appearance of this ray work variant.
