About the project

Hidden within the energetic downtown of Guangzhou, the Mandarin Oriental stands as a serene escape, where the rapid pace of city life dissipates to unveil the distinctive allure of the Orient. The entrance of the hotel is marked by a design inspired by the traditional Chinese fan, a symbol significant to the Mandarin Oriental for its phonetic resemblance to ‘goodness’ in Chinese. This entrance sets a tone of noble elegance with its integration of natural elements and a layout that presents oriental culture through modern artistry, embodied in strategically placed paintings and sculptures that curate an art gallery-like atmosphere.

Adjacent to this tranquil oasis, the Mandarin Cake Shop offers a verdant retreat, its lush surroundings and warm sunlight crafting a peaceful haven. Inside, the atmosphere shifts to cozy tranquility, where the greenery seems to bring the outside in, enhancing the display of exquisite cakes set against French-style cabinetry with antique bronze accents. The shop’s interior continues to draw inspiration from traditional Lingnan gardens, as seen in Thomas Allom’s illustrations, blending these historical elements with modern design to foster a space rich in cultural and artistic expression. Here, every detail from the grille-adorned screens to the meticulous VIP rooms contributes to an environment that not only offers gastronomic delights but also an immersive, culturally profound experience.
