Parts of Us by Gensler

Parts of Us – commemorates nature and cultivates conversations of ecological awareness. Parts of Us is a modular set that can be re-arranged according to its users’ needs. The concepts behind Parts of Us come from biomimicry, natural evolution and kintsugi.

Biomimicry allows us to draw inspiration from the patterns and shapes in nature that are also seen within us. For example, the rings of life in a tree are similar to our fingerprints; the intricate veins in our bodies are akin to the complex roots and leaves of plant life.

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — a metaphor for embracing flaws and imperfections. We applied this concept to purposefully accentuate nature in our design that inspires connection and interaction, adding another layer of interest to its user.

The intended setting for Parts of Us is outdoors – allowing it to grow along with its environment. We envision that each module becomes a terrarium for natural life. Every piece with a replaceable light source would create an ideal environment for plant life and growth. Our purpose is to bring consciousness to the similarities between ourselves and the world around us. To show that one cannot live without the other and that we are responsible to each other and our planet. We are infinitely connected.
