15 years in the field

The expected professional identity in construction is to be male, however most jobs in construction do not require exceptional physical power, and women are equally capable of doing them. All my colleagues that share a respectful relationship with me. We have similar goals, and we exchange knowledge to accomplish those things as best we can.

The biggest stressors and challenges that you face?

Because of the high investment cost, economic considerations usually require the shortest possible construction periods, and there is some site work after hours due to building or clients requirements.  Therefore, sometimes you have to combine or sacrifice family life to provide support to your teams during a projects’ peak times.

Is it culture that prevents more women from entering this field? How can we change that?

The current image is that construction is more for men than women, but it is already changing more than ever before, and many companies are open to attracting women. A great example is INC, where there is a creative and diverse workforce. Our formula to success is team working, communication and literacy skills, and women are a big part of that!

A personal experience or a memory you would like to share?

I was part of a project with very challenging requirements and tight deadlines. We were struggling with a large number of tasks, so our strategy was to prioritise the work that required input from several stakeholders and focus on potential risks so they don’t become issues later. We held regular meetings and set specific dates for those tasks to be completed. The hard work, commitment, and enthusiasm of the whole team paid off and the project was a complete success. This motivates our team to continue this great practice in further projects.

Lastly, if you were to share one commitment to the growth and support of diversity and gender equality within the field of construction…

I would strongly encourage women to come forward and develop fulfilling careers in the construction industry. There are numerous opportunities out there!
