Salone del Mobile 2024: What Not To Miss

Salone del Mobile, Milan 2024 is less than a week away. The international trade fair’s 62nd iteration, per usual, will mark the beginning of a cycle of global design fairs for the year. From April 16th to 21st, Milan’s Rho Fiera fairgrounds will once again host this cornerstone of Milan Design Week 2024. Expectations are high, with approximately 2,000 exhibitors and over 300,000 visitors from across the globe poised to converge.

Amidst updated fairgrounds and special highlights like SaloneSatellite’s anniversary focus on emerging talent and the biennial EuroCucina showcase, this year promises an infusion of innovation. This comes as no surprise, since its inception Salone del Mobile has served as a hub for experimentation, collaboration, and exploration. Concurrently, Fuorisalone (April 15th-21st) gathers international designers and brands for exchanges and exhibitions across the city of Milan, emphasising principles of circular economy and sustainable design under the theme “Materia Natura”.

As prototypes are unveiled and narratives unfold across various living spaces, here is what seems most exciting:

Installations at Salone 2024

“Interiors by David Lynch: A Thinking Room” (Pavilions 5-7) is a unique installation conceived by renowned filmmaker David Lynch. It features two mirrored “thought rooms” symbolising portals into an immersive experience. Curated by Antonio Monda, the installation invites visitors to explore Lynch’s cinematic language, which delves into the realms of dreams and nightmares, challenging conventional interpretations. The Thinking Room, bathed in blue velvet, serves as a meditative space where visitors can lose and rediscover themselves, blurring the lines between artistry and personal introspection.

Meanwhile, “Under the Surface” (Pavilion 10) presents an innovative exploration of sustainable water use in bathroom design. Designed by Accurat, Design Group Italia, and Emiliano Ponzi, this installation resembles a submerged island, offering a visually engaging and educational narrative on environmental consciousness. Through dynamic data visualisation, it highlights technological advancements in water protection within bathroom furnishings. The project underscores the importance of delving beneath surface-level analyses, encouraging deeper understanding and fostering responsible consumer behaviour.
