Turn up the Hygge: The best of 3daysofdesign

Avowed for its functionality, Danish design embodies dainty, nature-inspired aesthetics. There are several attributions for this peculiar regional style. Some pin it to the heavy influence of the Bauhaus, while others see the region’s cold, dark and long winters as a reason for its light and airy furniture.

Denmark celebrates its distinctive design style via 3daysofdesign between the 7th and 9th of June. In cohorts with other global names, home-grown brands put up a boisterous display throughout Copenhagen. Streets, showrooms and events flooded the city. Leaders behind the popularising Danish design showcased their latest launches. Even upcoming brands took to the spotlight to showcase their best. Here are the ones that left a mark…

What but a boisterous display of hospitality can you expect from a brand named after the host city? 3daysofdesign saw the illustrious brand showroom’s turning into ‘Hotel Normann’,  a three-storey hotel boasting six suites and numerous innovative spaces. With this exhibit, Normann Copenhagen upheld Danish design’ as a potent choice for all needs, styles and preferences.

A courtyard lounge blurred the lines between indoors and outdoors and had visitors drop by more than once. In-premises destinations such as the Pind Cafe, Purple Club and Burra Lounge also pulled in curious crowds. The design studio on the fourth floor coerced aficionados to witness the behind-the-scenes. The showroom was bedecked in Normann Copenhagen classics and as many as 30 of their new collections. Those whose interests have been piqued can still visit Hotel Normann. It is open for business through Copenhagen’s fall and summer.

Leading fabric and acoustics manufacturer, Kvadrat launched the Multiply curtain collection. Concocted by renowned French designer Inga Sempé, the collection infused a supple finesse at the premise. The colours and patterns of interwoven yarn embodied the softness and subdued craft associated with Danish design impeccably. Inga Sempé and Kvadrat’s Creative Director Isa Glink were stars of the launch talk on day one of the event. Kvadrat’s acoustic Textile Board and rugs by Muller Van Severen also impressed visitors during 3daysofdesign.

Louis Poulsen presented a range of quirky lighting products, taking the Danish delicacy a notch up. Conceived in collaboration with local artists, Home in Heaven, the glass products were the talk of the town. The Louis Poulsen venue of a quaint, stone mansion with ornate arches conspired with the blithe lighting art pieces. An aura of sophistication didn’t stop visitors from frolicking in the gardens. They took in crisp rays of the sun while soaking in the almost-psychedelic vibe of the autumn launch.

After the successful ReForm A Wave collection with Ege Carpets, Laura Bilde and Linnea Blæhr premiered their upcoming carpet collection, SHE, at 3daysofdesign. Their previous project drew inspiration from the landscapes of the Danish west coast. While SHE is a homage to unrecognised female artists in textile weaving, sculpture, and painting crafts.

Ege Carpets arranged for a showcase inside the Lapidarium of Kings. This premise bolstered visitors in the era of the collections’ dated inspirations. Amidst ostentatious carved sculptures, simple wooden frames featured six distinctive carpet patterns. Each is treated as an artistic creation and open to personal interpretation. The carpets were handmade, flaunting imperfections to achieve a nonchalant aesthetic.

The chosen colour scheme reflected the predominant shades of functionalism in the 1930s. These hues are prevalent even today. SHE is exclusively crafted using 100% pure British wool, known for its durable and resilient fibres.

Moroso‘s participation in 3daysofdesign culminated in the power of design as a catalyst for connections and creativity. One of the highlights was a discussion titled “Moroso Geography”, which explored the intersection of design and art. Following the discussion, there was a workshop in collaboration with Opificio Fred. Here architects were challenged to create three cocktails inspired by the Moroso catalogue.

The exhibition also showcased Moroso’s commitment to openness and external influences. The Rows collection by Patricia Urquiola, inspired by linearity, was inspired by architecture. Dew, designed by Nendo, mimics the form of a water droplet. The Gogan sofa, reminiscent of pebbles, and the Getlucky armchair with a decorative bow-like backrest completed the display.
