To address this, there’s a strategic push to redesign bookstores to appeal to non-readers by offering experiences that can’t be found online, enticing them to spend time in these physical spaces. This approach aims to repurpose bookstores as cultural hubs rather than just retail points, encouraging visitors to dedicate time they would otherwise spend on their smartphones.
Moreover, the renovation of Shanghai Book City illustrates a broader vision to transform the bookstore into a cultural complex. This redesign includes preserving the historical façade while integrating modern commercial and cultural spaces that resonate with both the heritage and the contemporary urban spirit of Shanghai. The space will feature a variety of artistic and commercial endeavors, aiming to become a cultural landmark that offers more than just books, thereby drawing in a wider audience and ensuring the bookstore’s relevance and sustainability in a digital age.
