About the project

This project was particularly interesting as it involved the renovation of a historic building dating back to 1900. The building retained a good number of its original and significant elements, which could be recovered and enhanced. It was one of those gifts that interior design offers: transforming obsolete spaces into contemporary ones, while maintaining their beauty, personality and character.

Although some of these ornamental elements, such as moldings or stained glass windows were valuable and significant, and there were other more functional elements such as hydraulic flooring and woodwork that deserved to be preserved, the original layout was intricate and winding, with numerous rooms that were difficult to use and not very habitable.

The ABATON studio modified the distribution in an important way, and adapted it to contemporary needs, creating large and comfortable spaces and reducing the communication spaces or corridors as much as possible. This gave rise to modern living rooms and a modern and functional kitchen that is quite protagonist. Keeping these elements distanced us from the minimalist houses, and meant a compromise in the interior design project. A compromise that is materialized, for example, with small gestures such as the vintage kitchen lamps, which link the modern furniture with the stained glass windows. The overall concept for the interior design project was to harmonize all these elements with a clean and contemporary aesthetic, for which it was decided to incorporate some pieces of furniture to reinforce this dialogue, and to coexist in harmony with other custom-designed pieces. Some outstanding pieces are the antique Indonesian loom coffee table from the BATAVIA collection, the oak and anodized aluminum sideboard from Punt Mobles.
