Beyond, South Africa

12 May , 2019

Perched on the shoulders of Lion’s Head, Beyond House, designed by SAOTA, springs from a steep hillside that drops into Clifton’s white beaches. The primary living area is placed at the very top, and includes a large, double-height, open plan space that houses the kitchen, bar, dining, living and family rooms. A winter lounge, study and art studio occupy the mezzanine level.

The overall theme of the house was inspired by the modernist movement, and plays on the subtle combination of light and space. From the almost chiaroscuro treatment of the cavernous entrance hall, the design flows into a brightly lit upper level, moving seamlessly via intersecting planes, ceilings and floor treatments.

The interplay of light, space and raw materiality of the interior helps to accentuate the collection of contemporary South African art placed throughout, creating a unique space that blurs the lines between home and gallery.
