About the project
Designed to be approachable, friendly and welcoming, the new Jones the Grocer, Shanghai opened its first outlet outside the region in China. Designed by LXA and contracted to Jingtai Group, the restaurant’s Shanghai venue was inspired by turning vernacular Australian architecture on its head, goes back to the brand’s roots, and delivering something contemporary and unique.
With Shanghai being a new market, the designers incorporated the brand’s story by way of a large mural alongside blue-and-white signature, subway tiles, which also tie in its identity with the local community while maintaining the grocer feel seen in cheese and charcuterie shops.
These cooler finishes are softened by warm, crown-cut walnut veneer and natural oak shelving, with recessed LEDs to further accentuate the products on display. The addition of a live steak grill and by-the-glass wine tasting is a further evolution of the brand to better adapt to the Shanghai market and to also educate its customers along their foodie journey.
Typography and signages further add an edgy accent to the semi-industrial chic look, with classic, distressed leather lounge chairs that invite you into their comfortable den.
