About the project
Designed by Kinnersley Kent Design, the interiors of NYC Roasting Plant are fresh, contemporary and playful, reflecting the brand’s renewed identity and direction. A core part of the design language is the quirky illustrations that feature across the packaging and as an in-store mural. To localise the design for London, the drawing of the Javabot technology (a roasting and brewing system) weaves around characters to resemble an eccentric tube map.
Kinnersley Kent Design and Roasting Plant worked together to refine the Javabot interface, making it feel more natural and organic. The team replaced stainless steel handles and brackets with warm-to-the-touch timber, and redesigned the lever mechanism to make it more intuitive. Untreated paper labels on the tubes tell customers about the origins and flavour profiles of the different coffee beans. The layout is designed so customers queue beneath the pipes, immersing them in the process.
To remove barriers between customers and staff, the team integrated seating into the bar counter. The welcoming interior design embraces technology whilst bringing in warmth and texture. The earthy material palette features oak, tan leather and porcelain tiles. Dark cork wall panels represent the colour of coffee beans while also offering sound absorption. Coffee sacks are on display instead of back of house, and the green bean loader for the Javabot is on view on the café floor.
Distinctive ‘fossil’ pattern floor tiles feature a hand-drawn feel, with a copper logo inlaid near the entrance, while white oak table tops are subtly embossed with logos.
