About the project
Tawa Bakery, Abu Dhabi is the only 100% gluten-free bakery in this city. It was founded on the belief that eating gluten-free should never mean sacrificing taste or quality. The name Tawa means ‘flat frying pan’ in Arabic – a name chosen to reflect the founder’s Emirati roots and love of cooking.
Tawa asked Kinnersley Kent Design (KKD) to review Tawa’s logo and design the concept for their first café. The aim was to create a sociable and relaxed space that expresses the brand’s personality, demonstrating its values and passion for wholesome, delicious food. They adapted Tawa Bakery’s logo to make it more versatile and easier to read, amending the English typeface to match the Arabic and aligning the two. They also turned the brand icon into a secondary marque that acts as a seal of quality on Tawa’s products.
The interior design features a contemporary Scandinavian aesthetic, complemented by a statement tiled floor that adds an Arabic feel and visual interest. To create a bigger sense of space, they made the whole environment lighter, bringing in a palette of white-painted brick walls, oak timber fixturing and brass detailing. Evenly-spaced pendant lights created a warm atmosphere throughout. New display areas created visual merchandising opportunities, displaying freshly-baked goods and ingredients that customers can take home with them.
The café has been designed to emanate a lot of charm and relaxing vibes. This has been accomplished through a colour mixing of white, light beige for wooden furniture, gold with many accessories here and there – pots, lighting – and dark grey on the ceiling. Lamps that give an industrial flair and pair well with the trendy, patterned and tiled floor have also been used. A lovely black-and-white artwork has also been created, specifically for Tawa Bakery, by a UAE-based artist. It covers the full wall on the back and adds personality to this unique decor.
KKD also assessed the layout and increased the number of covers by bringing in a variety of built-in and flexible seating. Humorous messaging reminds customers that gluten is forbidden; and a golden inscription above the entrance states ‘no gluten beyond this point’, with further reminders inside communicating Tawa Bakery’s relaxed brand personality.
