About the project
Located in one of the greenest corners of Mumbai near the old Parsi colony in Dadar, this 3000 sq. ft residence sets off on a unique journey of marrying the old with the new. The home is designed for a couple in their 60’s and their family; it offers solace and peace channelled through scenic views enriched by natural light, courtesy its premium location on the 11th floor and the adjacent context.
Encapsulating the client’s requirement for a contemporary home with accents of the English countryside with its classical details, Quirk Studio designs this neoclassical-inspired space through a modern lens. They weave a sublime, neutral space through layers of details, all minimalistic yet opulent, radiating natural light and warmth.
Upon entrance, the passage becomes the circulation spine of this home, connecting the study, the living room’s formal/informal arrangements and the dining area, with the kitchen on one side to the master bedroom and the guest bedroom on the other. Each space, bound by a subdued colour palette, explores a palette of natural stone, wood, cane and linen. Despite using only a handful of materials, the designers bathe the space with intricate details that define its experience keeping it far from being mundane.
The tranquil living room is an expansive space demarcated by statement furniture pieces, each of which reflects the overriding design aesthetic. The pristine white Bianco Esilla flooring from Classic Marble Company ties the space together, which is beautifully contrasted by the grey walls. Segregating the space with the formal area, is a curated pair of sofas in mellow shades and a pair of classic Chandigarh chairs in a light oak wood finish.
An eloquent ombre art piece in sage green is perched on the panelled wall behind, along with another piece in blue on the adjacent wall by the informal seating. A pair of lounge chairs upholstered in black and white pinstripes sit affront a contemporary console in grey and the opposite wall conceals a gorgeous bar equipped with plenty of storage. The ombre murals are handcrafted by artist Nimrit Narang; the conversation starter pieces are designed on the concept of yin and yang, adding greatly to the space without overpowering the aesthetic.
Located between windows on two of its sides, the dining table is connected to the living through a pseudo-three-centred arch, which adds to the neoclassical appeal. A minimalistic table top in white marble sits on fluted oak wood legs, paired with grey dining chairs. Keeping functionality in mind, the area is connected to the kitchen through a sliding partition door with fluted glass. Channelling opulence into the setting are two chandeliers on the top. However, it is the views of the skyline that is the show stopper here.
Arches become a motif for the home, lining the central corridor. A pair of consecutive arches become guiding elements, leading one from the living spaces to the bedrooms. The panelled passage is lined with black and white art frames on one side, breaking the symmetric with poetic elegance.
The master bedroom is sublime, with an all-white decor framing the grey-toned furniture pieces. Layering the space with textures and materials, the designers add depth and character to the single-hued space. Here, a play of lines becomes evident, witnessed in the panelled wall, the proportion of the wardrobe and the print of the ottoman. Like the room, the bathroom reflects the white aesthetic through the white marble-clad on all the surfaces, along with the cast-in-situ basin counter on a wooden cabinet. It is further made luxurious through hints of gold incorporated through the accessories.
Staying true to the palette, the guest bedroom is a grey haven. Wooden elements warm the simple and classic interior through the herringbone-patterned floor, the bed’s ornate frame, and the side tables. Here, the upholstery of the bed back hosts a striped upholstery. A pair of watercolour paintings of the owner’s favourite pictures add life and colour to the setting. The home has soothing ancillary spaces to celebrate living– be it the rustic balcony with deck wood floor, outdoor furniture and breathtaking views or the cosy study room with minimalist furniture in warm oak wood and herringbone-patterned flooring. Even the eclectic powder bathroom aligns with the colour palette. However, textured beige and black marble on the wall and the basin counter, add an element of surprise for the user.
Poetry in motion, his home oozes tranquillity through every corner, element and material. By bringing in nature itself, through views and light, the designers blur the boundaries between inside and outside. Abiding by their philosophy of creating a unique experience through timeless designs, Quirk Studio weaves a beautiful spatial narrative through muted colours and design details.
