About the project
Mosman House is SAOTA’s first project in collaboration with Sydney based TKD Architects, with Alexandra Kidd Design handling the decor.
Positioned on two adjacent sites and recessed into the hillside, this home is accessible from two streets – the guest entrance on the upper level and the parking access from the lower street.
Guests are welcomed through a wooden door, over a bridge that crosses a private garden with exposed rock features below. On the main level, the outdoor space includes a covered lounge and dining area, as well as bedrooms, which float above the underlying platforms. The main living area lies below street level for maximum privacy, and offers sweeping views of the Sydney Harbour and beyond. Moreover, a covered outdoor area on the lower level leads directly to a dark granite pool and a secluded hot tub.
Smooth concrete and sandstone cladding run throughout the architecture. This lightness of the sandstone is offset by warm textures of wood and bronze used for internal cladding and screening. Statement pieces, such as a hand cut, grey granite counter, further showcases and contrasts the pristine craftsmanship. The layering and intersection of each floor enables the house to not only manage the steep slope, but instead use it to create light filled, double volume spaces. In addition to the abundant living spaces, the home comprises five bedrooms, a sauna, gym, wine cellar and a cinema room. And water features on both the upper and lower levels add hints of blue to the interior, creating a connection to the harbour beyond.
