About the project
The Oman Across Ages Museum, inaugurated in March 2023 near Nizwa, spans 300,000 square meters, utilizing cutting-edge technology to showcase Oman’s history from prehistoric times to the present. Originating from Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said’s vision, the museum engages the younger generation with its interactive cultural experience. Cox Architecture collaborated with the Royal Court of Affairs to bring this vision to life.
The museum features two main galleries: The History Gallery and the Renaissance Gallery, focusing on Oman’s modernization since the 1970s. The architecture, inspired by the local landscape, incorporates 130,000 square meters of Omani stone to cool the surroundings and includes sustainable practices, such as using stone waste for the museum’s garden.
The building’s design protects the interior from direct sunlight and employs artificial lighting strategically. The exterior’s triangular sail is illuminated using Platea Pro floodlights, providing a striking visual effect. The interior utilizes recessed luminaires, such as Linealuce, iN, Reflex, and Palco projectors, creating a harmonious play of light and shadow. Square openings on the roofs allow natural light while housing light sources, enhancing the visitor experience.
